THE HIPPO

The concrete Hippopotamus statue in Walsall has gained a strong following over the years, becoming a beloved landmark that even has its own internet fan club. Despite facing ridicule upon its unveiling in 1972, the statue's popularity has only continued to grow.

Known as the original place to meet family or friends in Walsall town centre in the 1970's and 1980's.

The origins of why a Hippo was chosen for Walsall are varied, with some speculating that the inspiration may have come from the game Hungry, Hungry Hippo, although this seems unlikely as the game was launched by Hasbro six years after the statue was installed.
