the salvation army

The Salvation Army has a rich history connected to the town, with its roots tracing back to the mid-1860s when William Booth, who later became the organization's General, lived in the area. Booth and his family resided at 5 Hatherton Street, where he began mission work, forming the "Hallelujah Band of Reformed Reprobates." His work in the town eventually led to the construction of a hall in what later became Revival Street in Bloxwich in 1865. This hall, known as the Revival Chapel, was used by the Salvation Army by the late 1890s.

In 1901, a Salvation Army barracks was established on Clarendon Street in Bloxwich, though it was in use only until 1907, when the organization moved to the former Gospel Mission Hall on Pinfold. Around the same time, the Walsall Corps of the Salvation Army was formed in 1882. By 1883, the Corps had established its base in a barracks at the Hatherton Street skating rink. In 1902, a new barracks and school were opened on Green Lane, which continues to serve the community to this day. During the 1930s and 1940s, the Salvation Army also maintained premises on West Bromwich Street, further expanding its outreach in the area.
